Dear residents, Burglars will be on the lookout for signs of expensive purchases, visible presents, packaging left outside, or old electronics suggesting new replacements. Please do not let this happen to you. Here’s what you need to know: What Burglars WantHigh value, easy to sell items like jewellery, cash, mobile phones, laptops and tablets, this list goes on. They can be organised criminals or opportunistic thieves, but all seek quick access and valuable goods. Why It MattersBurglary isn’t just about stolen possessions, it can leave victims feeling scared, violated and financially strained.
Top Tips to Stay SecureDon’t leave presents under the Christmas tree if they’re visible from windows or doors.Register valuables (phones, laptops, bikes, consoles) on secure sites like www.securedbydesign.com.Dispose of packaging carefully, don’t advertise your new purchases.Avoid keeping large amounts of cash at home.Lock all doors and windows; use deadlocks on outside doors.Secure sheds and garages to prevent access to tools and ladders.Never leave keys near doors and window ledges because burglars know exactly where to look. When out at night, leave lights on and curtains drawn to look occupied.Make sure your Ring Doorbell cameras or any other cameras you use are fully charged and in working order. Try to not leave presents in vehicles when shopping and if you are shopping and have a parcel shelf, use it to hide them, however best practice is to never leave expensive items in a vehicle especially over night.Make sure all external security lights are in good working order. Lock your vehicles, you will be very surprised how many people forget to do this. If your house is alarmed then please make sure you activate it when you go out, or going to bed. Bring your wheelie bins in, do not leave them outside on the roadside or pavements. If you have livestock, then please keep up the regular checks during the night and make sure that all the security liughts are in good working order.
If You Find Signs of a Break-InDon’t go inside or call out, the intruder could still be there.Go to a neighbour and call the Police immediately.Don’t touch anything or tidy up—preserve evidence. Finally, on behalf of Bedfordshire Police, especially us here at Riseley Police Station, I wish you, and all those dear to you, a happy and peaceful Christmas and a prosperous New Year; please keep safe, and have fun over the festive period.
